In Greek mythology , Hermafroditos ( Greek : Ἑρμάφρόδιτός ; English : hermaphroditus ) was the son of Hermes and Afrodit . Born as a man who is very handsome, it is transformed into androgynous beings in a manner united with nymphs Salmakis . His name is used as an excuse for giving hermaphrodite .

Hermafroditos name comes from his parents, Hermes and Afrodit. It was raised by nymphs on Mount Ida , sacred mountain in Phrygia (now Turkey ). At the age of fifteen years, they get bored with their environment and to travel to cities such as Lykia and Karia . Karia jungle, near Halicarnassus (now Bodrum, Turkey) it meets the Salmakis, a Naiad in a pond.Salmakis Hermafroditos and eager to try sex with it, but refused. When Hermafroditos think Salmakis went, Hermafroditos off his clothes and went into an empty pool. Salmakis suddenly out from behind trees and jumping into the pool. She hugged the body Hermafroditos, forcibly kissed her and touched her breast. While struggling to escape Hermafroditos, Salmakis request to the gods so that they can unite. His wish is granted, and their bodies blended into one. In the sense of shame and sadness, Hermafroditos make their own oaths, condemn the pond where anyone who bathe in it will change also.
